IN 2004 WE STARTED OUT WITH A SMALL TAKEAWAY TUCKED AWAY AT THE CORNER OF HAYR ROAD AND DORNWELL ROAD IN THE SUBURB OF THREE KINGS. WITH THE OPENING ON 20, AUGUST THERE WAS A GALORE OF INVITEES, FRIENDS AND ACQUAINTANCES. ALL WERE TREATED TO SUMPTUOUS MEAL,ON THE HOUSE AND THAT WAS THE BEST PUBLICITY EVER REQUIRED.
FROM THERE THERE WAS NO LOOKING BACK. SUDDENLY A TWIST WAS AROUND THE CORNER. INITIALLY WE HAD ONLY THE INDIAN MENU. WE HAD A CATERING ORDER FOR THE DIWALI DANCE AND DECIDED TO TRY SERVING SOME ROAD SIDE BOMBAY CHINESE FOOD. WHILE PREPARING THE FOOD, A SIKH CUSTOMER CAME IN AND WAS OVERCOME BY THE AROMA OF THE FOOD. HE PRECISELY SAID 'THE SMELL IS LIKE BACK HOME'. I REMEMBER VERY CLEARLY, WE WERE FRYING CHICKEN LOLLIPOPS AND OFFERED HIM SOME TO TASTE. HE WAS VERY IMPRESSED AND ASKED IF WE COULD MAKE INDIAN STYLE NOODLES AND FRIED RICE. RESPONDING IN THE AFFIRMATIVE I ASKED HIM TO COME THE NEXT DAY AND COOKED HIM FOOD THAT BLEW HIS MIND. HE RETURNED THE NEXT DAY WITH A FEW OF HIS FRIENDS WITH DEMANDS FOR VARIOUS INDIAN CHINESE STYLE FOOD GREW AND THE REST IS HISTORY.
OVER A PERIOD OF TIME WE WERE KNOWN MORE AS BOMBAY CHINESE THAN OUR ORIGINAL NAME DA BOMBAY BBQ AND OVER A PERIOD OF TIME WE GREW WITH A STEADY INCREASE OF REGULAR CUSTOMERS WHO WE SERVICE EVEN TODAY AFTER 9 YEARS AND ITS THANKS TO THE LOYAL, FAITHFUL CUSTOMERS WE HAVE NOW HAVE OUR VERY OWN SHOP IN THE HEART OF THE CBD AREA ON QUEEN STREET, AUCKLAND
Punjab with its rich cultivating lands has traditionally been an agrarian society since the time of the ancient Harappan civilization. The land in Punjab is ideal for growing wheat and is called the ‘India’s bread-basket’.
The two major crops cultivated by the farmers of Punjab are rice and wheat, which remain the principal crops grown during the kharif season and the rabi season. The indigenous Punjabi basmati rice has been the pride of the region being grown since time immemorial and we all know the famous Naan bread made from Punjab grown wheat.
The spices found in Punjabi cuisine have been used since ancient times for their health benefits and their ability to make the food taste so much yummier. In the beginning of time it was known that hunters and gatherers wrapped meat in the leaves of bushes, accidentally discovering that this process enhanced the taste of the meat. Thus, the curiosity of mankind took over and that’s how the spices and herbs became integral part of our cooking.
